So what is an encaustic tile?
They are a man made clay tile in which the pattern or design on the surface is not a product of the glaze but of different colors of clay.
They are usually of two colors but a tile may be composed of as many as six.
The pattern appears inlaid into the body of the tile, so that the design remains as the tile is worn down.
Where can they be used?
All types of floor or wall application with the exception of wet floors…, They can be used externally as long as they are not at risk of frost.
Encaustic tiles may be glazed or unglazed and the inlay colour will be 3-4 mm, where as porcelain or ceramic versions are printed on the surface.
